「Night and Day」というJazzの名曲がある。 日本語では、「夜も昼も」と訳されている。 Cole Porterの作詞作曲で、 フレッド・アステアとクレア・ルース共演のミュージカル「ザ・ゲイ・ディボーシー」曲である。 歌の中には。「Day and Night」というフレイズも出てくる。中学で習う英語で訳すと、「夜と昼」となるが、それでは伝わらない。やはり「夜も昼も」でなければ・・ リッチモンド・パークの近所で見かけた交通標識である。 「Day or Night」ときた。そのまま中学生英語で訳せば、「昼か夜」「昼あるいは夜」または「昼または夜」となるが、言わんとした意味は「昼でも夜でも」であろう。 落語に禁酒の話がある。一年の禁酒を誓った男が、よんどころなく、ある夜酒を飲む仕儀となった。翌日神様に出向き、「昼は絶対に飲みませんから夜は勘弁して下さい。その代りに、２年の誓にします。」と掛け合う。その後、昼も飲まざるをえないことになり、また神さんに、「えーっと、どうしても昼も飲まなきゃなりません。許して下さい。その代り誓いを４年にいたしやす。」と願をかけ直す話である。この標識は夜か昼のどちらかに交通規則に従えば良いことになる。 この標識を作った人は、「and」では弱すぎると考えて、あえて「or」と誤用し分かっていて使ったのであろう。「whole day」「all day」「always」「24 hours」では物足りなかったのであろう・・ ついでに、歌詞の紹介もして置く。 ＮＩＧＨＴ ＡＮＤ ＤＡＹ ／COLE PORTER Where the jungle shadows fall Like the tick tick tick of the eye of the clock You're standing up against the wall Like the drip drip drip of the rain drops When the sun shines through So a voice within me Keeps revealing you...you Night and day You are the one Only you beneath the moon And under the sun Whether near to me or far It's no matter, baby, where you are I think of you Night and day Day and night Why is it so That this longing for you follows wherever I go In the roaring traffic gloom In the silence of my lonely room I think of you Night and day Night and day Under the hide of me Though such a hungry yearning Burning inside of me This torment won't be through 'til you let me spend my life making love to you Day and night Night and day Night and day Under the hide of me Oh, such a hungry yearning Burning, burning inside of me This torment won't be through 'til you let me spend my life making love to you Day and night Night and day Night and day Night and day Night and day Night, night, night and day Night and day Night, night and day Night and day |
