A Few Lines on the Dance and the Institution

Introduction & brief history

The Gotipua ware young boys who dress as females and dance. Along with the decline of Devadasi or Mahari tradition, the class of these boy dancers came in to existence that could carry out the tradition and it is largely from them that the present form of Odissi dance has been evolved. The dance of Gotipuas is in Odissi style but their technique costume and above all presentation differ from most of the Maharis. The singing is done by the dancers themselves. Most of the present day Gurus of Odissi were Gotipua in their young days. This dance form believed to have come in to performance in the medieval period during the time of the Bhoi King Ramachandradev. Ramachandrandev also built gymnasia in several parts of the town. There were like clubs and acted as nurseries for talented young boys who along with physical exercises also tock part in cultural activities. The main reason for the rise of the Gotipua, dancing as females appear to be embedded in the culture of SAKHIBHAV, a religious movement of which the devotees consider themselves as consorts of Lord Sri Krishna.
Ray Ramananda, the Minister of Pratap Rudra Dev (1447~1540) was a devotee vaisnav, who believed in the culture of Sakhibhav when Ray Ramananda met Sri Chaitanya, the concept of "Mabhur Ras Upasana" one of the ways of worshipping the Lord in vaisnavism impressed him emphatically. Therefore he adopted the norms of Sakhibhav in his worship. According to this bhav, the male devotees were to meditate on Sri Krishna as their Lord and consider themselves as his concorts. The song in Gotipua dance are generally the composition f vaisnab poets of Orissa on the deliance of Radha and Sri Krishna.

Bandha Dance

The most interesting item in Gotipua dance is "Bandha Nrutya". It is a dance with acrobatic poses and movement. The difficult and intricate poses of the body with suppling of various limbs are known as "Bandha" in Oriya. Because of the ordeous strenuous and time taking nature the young boys aged about 8/9 years are given vigorous training to learn these dance. "Abhinaya Chandrika" & "Sangitqa Darpana" give details about "Bandha Nrutya" "Abhinaya Chandrika" mentions 10 varieties of Bandhas. They are Gagana, Durumukha Torona Shayana etc. There are some "Bandhas" which are found in oral tradition and known as Chira Nahuna, Mayura Ohara Mayura and Sagadia, etc.
